A Lasting Paint Job Starts Below the Surface
Choosing a new paint color is usually the most exciting part of a home painting project. Before we open a can of paint, however, we need to make sure the surfaces underneath are clean, solid, and ready for a new finish.
Painting over cracks, holes, loose caulk, peeling paint, or damaged wood may hide the problem temporarily, but it will not correct it. Those imperfections often return and can cause the new paint to crack, bubble, or peel sooner than expected.
At Blue Mountain Painting, we take surface preparation seriously because it directly affects how the completed project looks and how long it lasts.
Drywall and Plaster Damage
Interior walls naturally collect dents, nail holes, scratches, and small cracks over time. Larger problems may also develop after water damage, settling, furniture impacts, or previous remodeling work.
Before painting, we patch and repair damaged drywall or plaster so the finished wall looks smooth and consistent. Simply applying paint over a hole or deep scratch will not make it disappear. In many cases, the new color can make the imperfection even more noticeable.
After completing the repair, we sand the area and apply primer when needed. This helps the repaired section blend with the surrounding wall instead of showing through the final coat.
Peeling or Flaking Paint
Loose paint must be removed before a surface can be repainted. New paint needs a stable surface to bond with, and it cannot provide lasting results when the layer underneath is already peeling.
For exterior projects, peeling paint may also expose bare wood to rain, snow, sunlight, and changing New England temperatures. We scrape away compromised paint, sand rough edges, and prime exposed materials before applying the finish coats.
Peeling paint can sometimes point to an underlying moisture problem. Before covering the area, it is important to understand why the paint failed and whether another repair is needed.
Wood Rot and Minor Carpentry Issues
Exterior trim, siding, fences, decks, and other wood surfaces can deteriorate after years of moisture exposure. Soft, crumbling, or discolored wood should not be painted without being evaluated first.
Paint can improve the appearance of wood, but it cannot restore material that has already lost its strength. Damaged sections may need wood rot repair or minor carpentry before the painting process begins.
Addressing these concerns helps create a more dependable surface while protecting nearby materials from further deterioration.
Gaps and Failed Caulking
Caulk helps seal gaps around trim, windows, doors, baseboards, and other joints. As it ages, it can shrink, split, or pull away from the surface.
These openings may create visible lines inside the home or allow moisture to reach exterior materials. During preparation, we inspect gaps and cracks and apply new caulk where necessary.
Fresh caulking creates cleaner transitions and gives the completed paint job a more polished appearance.
Stains and Water-Damaged Areas
Water stains should never be treated as a cosmetic problem alone. Before repainting, the source of the moisture should be identified and corrected. Otherwise, the stain may return, and the surrounding drywall, plaster, or wood may continue to deteriorate.
Once the source has been handled and the surface is dry, damaged materials can be repaired. Stain-blocking primer may also be needed to keep discoloration from bleeding through the new paint.
Dirt, Grease, and Mildew
Paint adheres best to a clean surface. Interior woodwork may collect dust, oils, and residue, while exterior siding and trim can develop dirt, mildew, or other buildup.
Our preparation process includes cleaning the surfaces before sanding, priming, and painting. Exterior areas may need power washing to remove dirt and treat mold or mildew. Kitchen cabinets and trim also require careful cleaning because grease and residue can interfere with adhesion.
